2012 The Year Of.........?

We're in week three of our New Year: are you on track with your New Year's Resolutions?

To be honest, I dislike New Year's Resolutions. They create pressure and unrealistic expectations that we end up beating ourselves up for when we don't (can't) meet them.

I do love the start of a new year though: a chance to start a fresh and choose our focus for the coming 12 months. To ask - what did I like about last year and want to do more of, and what didn't I like that I want to do less of? What is important to me about this year, how do I want to to shape up, what do I want it to be about? The finish and start of year allow us to reflect on the recent past and be in charge of our future.

To truly achieve our goals and / or intentions for this year, we require a few things; it is not about saying we are going to do it, it is about achieving what we set out to do, whatever that is for us personally. I would like to recommend Janice Lundy's blog, Awakened Living, where she elegantly indentifies three things we need to truly make a difference to create LASTING change : 1. Readiness 2. Passion 3. I also recommend a fellow NLPer, Heidi Heron's blog, who elegantly identifies action, staying power and time as the keys for implementing a new habit. The unfortunate pattern people repeat it to try something for "oh, about a week...." and if it hasn't been a miracle change to then give up! .... read more

We know from the Expertise literature that to become an expert in something takes over 10,000 hours of deliberate practice over at least 10 years. So, if there is something important to you, take action, be consistent, and give it more than a week!

Approach your 2012 with a theme as well, to set focus. Decide what, in general terms, the year is going to be about. Write it down. For me personally, 2012 is The Year Of Stability.
